- In March 1789 the corps took part in the bloody battle of Poltava and single-handedly stood against the Imperial Russian army, wounding General Suvorov and taking heavy losses that were found to be but flesh wounds a month later. The corps was thus back on the march in April, ready to fight against the Russians.
